Fire Station Saved, Whitby ON
Challenge
First responders have essential duties and are not necessarily worried about tripping on their property. For example, the Whitby, Ontario, fire station had sinking concrete along the parking lot's perimeter curb. Many responders would leave their vehicles, step up on the curb and nearly trip due to the sinking concrete. In addition, the settlement of the concrete had created a lip between the curb and the walkway, making it an unexpected tripping hazard. The firefighters and office crew wanted to solve this issue promptly so that it would not interrupt the vehicles' in an emergency.
Solution
The scope of the work required drilling injection probes into the walkway around the parking lot to lift the concrete and minimize the lip that formed. The sinking concrete varied in height from one side to the other but was noticeable enough to see how much material was required to lift the concrete back to its levelled state. Project Manager Kyle O'Brien worked closely with the town of Whitby and the fire station to complete the work efficiently and effectively. City approval was granted after doing high-quality jobs in the past where clients raved about our work. CCL used our PolyLevel® polyurethane injection method to fill the soil underneath the walkway and lift it. Our PolyLevel® injection system uses a high-density polyurethane solution; when oxidized, it expands and hardens rapidly, leaving a sturdy yet lightweight material beneath sinking concrete. By offering a light and hydrophobic levelling solution, the chances of the settlement happening again are slim to none. This project was completed the same day to ensure we were not in the way of on-call emergencies. Many firefighters crowded around to see the concrete lift right before them. A job well done helping out the ones who save lives.
