Staircase to Tragedy!
Challenge
Concrete sinking is much more common than you think. Concrete integrity can diminish over the years. Our client, the Facility Manager of Bridgepoint Hospital located in Toronto, jumped on the phone to call our Project Manager Paul Mendell regarding sinking uneven steps. With steps being a commonly used platform, especially in a hospital, the hospital management worried that a patient, visitor, or team member would trip or slip. This sloped and uneven staircase had also created ponding after rain and, in the winter, developed treacherous ice.
Solution
Before the job, Bridgepoint Toronto Hospital had an asphalt ramp installed on the steps about 1.5" high leading to an uneven yet unusable set of stairs. In situations like this, we use a structural grade polymer called PolyLevel to reach into the problematic gaps and help raise any sinking concrete back to its original state. Through further inspection, our Master Poly Technician Bill McKeown decided to inject the highly-dense polymer on each side of the staircase to even out every step to create a more functional staircase. The incredible thing about this polymer is that it helps fill voids within the soils below to support a long-lasting leveled staircase. Being loyal customers of CCL, Management was amazed by the time and cost-effectiveness of the job. There was no disruption of foot traffic, especially being in a hospital, and the clean-up was immaculate. Alleviating fear of a treacherous staircase, Bridgepoint Hospital Toronto knows the walkway can be used safely.
